The Damn Vulnerable Linux project
The Damn Vulnerable Linux (DVL) is a Linux-based security environment for IT security education. DVL distribution has been deliberately weakened to facilitate ethical hacking education. It is regularly updated with exploitable exercises with the solutions and corresponding exploits submitted by the community. It contains a plethora of IT security tools thus making it a good self-study material.
Its available as a Live CD and/or virtual machine image. Being vulnerable it is needless to say you CANNOT install it on a computer connected to the internet.
With its fully-packed lessons it teaches very valuable skills in attack/defense and security auditing.
Current stable release is DVL 1.4 with DVL 1.5 in the works. Download and check it out here
